Netflix just released the trailer for its new film Maestro, directed by and starring Bradley Cooper.
At its core, Maestro is a love story chronicling the lifelong relationship between Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein.
The love story spans over 30 years — from the time they met in 1946 at a party and continuing through two engagements, a 25-year marriage, and three children. It also includes Bernstein’s infidelity, particularly his dalliances with other men.
Expect to hear Leonard Bernstein’s music, as the project secured the rights to it, wresting it away from Jake Gyllenhaal’s The American.
The official soundtrack has not been released yet, but this Spotify playlist has some music likely to be heard in it, including:
West Side Story
On the Waterfront
Dialogues for Jazz Combo and Orchestra
Fancy Free
On the Town
Candide
Prelude, Fugue & Riffs
Jeremiah, Symphony No. 1
Kaddish, Symphony No. 3
The trailer itself contains “Adagietto” from Mahler’s Symphony No. 5. His music and Aaron Copland’s will be heard in the film as well.
Mahler’s music was an inspiration for Copland’s own works; Copland became a mentor and friend to Bernstein, and Bernstein was a tireless promoter of both Copland’s and Mahler’s works.
Maestro is set to premiere at the 80th Venice International Film Festival, where it will compete for the Golden Lion on September 2, 2023. It is scheduled for limited theatrical release on November 22 before streaming on Netflix on December 20.
Along with Bernstein’s music, the makeup department will undoubtedly make you feel as if you’re in the presence of the maestro.
Enjoy the music,
